Biography

Deane Yim is a Paediatric Imaging and Fetal Cardiologist at Perth Children’s Hospital and King Edward Memorial Hospital. She is the clinical lead of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and cardiology research lead at Perth Children's Hospital. Deane holds a Senior Lecturer appointment at the University of Western Australia. Her subspecialty interests are non-invasive cardiac imaging, including advanced transthoracic echocardiography, fetal and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.

Biography

Dr. Kuberan Pushparajah is a Clinical Reader in Paediatric Cardiology at the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences at King's College London. He is also an honorary consultant paediatric cardiologist at the Evelina London Children's Hospital, London. His interests are in cardiovascular imaging, namely in the fields of magnetic resonance imaging and advanced echocardiography including 3D echocardiography. He is the clinical lead for the Congenital Cardiac MRI programme, which encompasses congenital CMR from the fetus to the adult, and CMR-guided catheterisation. His focus is in the clinical translation of imaging techniques to improve patient outcomes.

Biography

Professor Christian Brizard has acquired international leadership as a Cardio-thoracic Surgeon in the field of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery. He is the Director of the Cardiac Surgery Department at the Royal Children’s Hospital, the largest paediatric cardiac centre in Australia. Dr Brizard has extensive experience in cardiopulmonary transplantation, circulatory supports (VAD & ECMO) and reconstructive valve surgery.

Biography

Professor Jan Marek is a Consultant Cardiologist with expertise in paediatric and prenatal cardiology and cardiovascular imaging. He has been working at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) since 2005 after a previous 20-year professional career at University Hospital Motol, Prague, Czech Republic. Jan is a Professor at the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at University College London (UCL) and Charles University, Prague. Jan trained as a paediatric cardiologist in Prague, Houston, and Toronto. Since 1991 he has specialised in prenatal cardiology and paediatric cardiovascular imaging and contributed to establishing specialist centers and departments in Prague, (University Hospital Motol), Munich (Deutsches Herzzentrum), and London (GOSH). He contributed a great deal to establishing a nationwide prenatal screening program in Czechoslovakia in 1985-1990. Jan completed five grants as a principal investigator and published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles. He published one textbook as a monograph and contributed to several other books and teaching materials.

Biography

Before joining The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) as the Division Head of Cardiovascular Surgery in 2019, David Barron was the Senior Cardiac Surgeon at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, UK. David had been a consultant (staff) at Birmingham Children’s Hospital since 1999. He graduated from St. Thomas’ Hospital in London, and had his cardiothoracic training at Papworth Hospital, Southampton, the Royal Brompton Hospital and Great Ormond Street. During his residency, he obtained a doctorate (MD) from Imperial College, London in biomechanical cardiac assist. He is dual qualified in both internal medicine and in cardiothoracic surgery. He was the lead for Congenital Cardiac Training in the UK and has been on the Executive of the British and European Cardiothoracic Societies. David was also a consultant at the Queen Elizabeth, University Hospital Birmingham for Adult Congenital Cardiac Surgery and Honorary Professor at the Department of Child Health, University of Birmingham.

Dr. Sara Thorne joined Toronto ACHD in 2019 after 20 years in practice at University Hospital Birmingham UK where she established the regional Adult Congenital Heart Disease Unit and the renowned Obstetric Cardiology Programme with Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital. She collaborated closely with the UK Confidential Enquiry for Maternal Mortality and other national bodies. She has published widely in the fields of adult congenital heart disease and obstetric cardiology. She has brought her experience to the Toronto ACHD and High-Risk Pregnancy Programs and is now working to establish a National Canadian Maternal Morbidity and Mortality review system. She is a skilled clinician teacher and her areas of expertise include adult congenital heart disease, inherited aortopathy, and obstetric cardiology.
