Biography

Jae K. Oh, M.D., is a consultant in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. He currently serves as director of the Echocardiography Core Laboratory. He is also director of the Pericardial Clinic and co-director of Integrated Cardiac Imaging. Dr. Oh is recognized with the distinction of a named professorship, the Samsung Professorship in Cardiovascular Diseases. He has been working with the Samsung Medical Center for Samsung-Mayo Collaboration and is the Founding General Director of Heart Vascular Stroke Institute at Samsung Hospital in Seoul, Korea. Dr. Oh earned his B.S. degree in biochemistry with honors at the University of Pennsylvania, and his M.D. degree at Pennsylvania State University. He completed a residency in internal medicine, with an outstanding achievement award, and a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases, both at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Dr. Oh has research interest in all aspects of echocardiography and its use in clinical trials as well as in clinical diagnoses. His research focuses on diastolic function, heart failure related to diastolic dysfunction, valvular heart diseases, pericardial diseases, and artificial intelligence using ECG and Echocardiography. He has established noninvasive Mayo Clinic diagnostic criteria for constrictive pericarditis and the concept of transient constriction. Dr. Oh is also passionate about pursuing multimodality imaging in cardiovascular diseases. He is frequently invited to give presentations on his research both domestically and internationally and has authored over 500 manuscripts. He has published 4 editions of “The Echo Manual” which has become a standard textbook for echocardiography. In recognition of his work, Dr. Oh has received many awards and honors, including the Cardiovascular Teacher of the Year for several years and Most Outstanding Mentor Award in Internal Medicine, conferred by Mayo Clinic, and named Lectureships (the William Gaash Lecture, Euro Echo Lecture, Edler Lecture at the EACVI, Echo Seoul, HB Callejo 1st Memorial Lecture in Philippine) Dr. Oh has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the European Society of Cardiology Myocardial-Pericardial working group and the 10th Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Echocardiography in June of 2019.

Biography

Athena Poppas, MD, FACC, is the Director of Lifespan Cardiovascular Institute, at Rhode Island, Miriam, and Newport Hospitals, and is Chief of the Cardiology Division and Professor of Medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr Poppas received a Bachelor of Science degree from Brown University and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics and fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine at University of Chicago Hospital. Her clinical and research areas of focus are in echocardiography and in treating patients with valvular heart disease and heart disease during pregnancy. She was named a Top Doctor by Rhode Island Monthly magazine and has received numerous teaching awards at Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital. Prior to becoming ACC president, Poppas held numerous leadership roles within the College including chair of the Women in Cardiology Section, chair of the ACC Annual Scientific Session in 2015- 2016, chair of the ACC Sections Steering Committee and chair of the ACC Governance Committee. She also served on the ACC Board of Governors as governor and president of the ACC Rhode Island Chapter, as well as on the ACC Board of Trustees. Dr Poppas is also a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography, where she has served on committees, including ethics, nominating and scientific programs. She has also worked with the American Heart Association and the European Society of Cardiology, among other organizations.

Biography

Dr James Marangou is a consultant cardiologist at Royal Perth & Fiona Stanley Hospitals and cardiology lead for WA Country Health Service - Kimberley region. He is a PhD student and honorary research fellow within the Global and Tropical Health division at Menzies School of Health Research. His PhD is supported by an National Health and Medical Research Council post-graduate scholarship. His research focuses on the impact and implementation of echocardiographic screening for rheumatic heart disease in First Nations communities.

Biography

Joseph Selvanayagam is an internationally recognised authority in cardiac imaging. He holds the Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine at Flinders University and is a Senior Clinical Cardiologist at Flinders Medical Centre, where he is the Director of Non-Invasive Cardiac Imaging. As the Director of Cardiac Imaging Research Group (CIRG), SA Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), he leads a group with an international reputation in randomised clinical trials, cardiomyopathy and cardiac imaging research. He graduated with first class Honours from the University of Adelaide in 1995, obtained his FRACP (Cardiology) in 2002 and his PhD from Oxford University (DPhil) in 2005. For his doctoral and post-doctoral work he received the Wellcome Trust (UK) Cardiovascular Research Fellowship, UK Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme and the Intermediate Research Fellowship award from the British Heart Foundation. In addition during this time, he received several national and international awards, including a merit award from Oxford University, and the Samuel Levine Finalist Award of the American Heart Association. Over the course of his research career he has attracted more than 28million AUD in grant funding. Prof Selvanayagam has published > 450 peer-reviewed manuscripts/abstracts/book chapters with an h-index of 48 and >16000 citations [source: Scopus].

He plans on undertaking further sub-speciality training overseas in 2025.

Biography

Professor Liza Thomas is a Conjoint Professor at Sydney University, Adjunct Professor at University of New South Wales and is the Clinical Lead for non-invasive cardiac imaging at Westmead Hospital. Her research focuses particularly on echocardiographic evaluation of atrial dynamics and function, chemotherapy related cardiomyopathy, amyloid and Fabry cardiomyopathies and cardiac involvement in chronic kidney disease. Liza is actively involved in teaching and supervises PhD and master's students. Liza has been and invited speaker at national and international meetings and has published over 200 peer reviewed papers.
