Biography

Dr Cheng Hwee Soh is a postdoctoral research fellow working at the Imaging Research Laboratory in the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute. His current areas of interest revolves around the prediction of cardiovascular diseases, specifically heart failure and asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction. He is also interested in identifying the impact of cancer and cardiotoxic cancer treatment in the development of heart failure.

Biography

Hadi Afsharan is an early-career research associate at the University of Western Australia (UWA). He graduated in June 2023 with a PhD from UWA, investigating the development and application of polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) in medical diagnosis. Prior to his PhD, Hadi worked for three years as a research associate at the immunology research centre, drug applied research centre, and Research Center for Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. His research was focused on two main streams: detecting cancer-related biomarkers at early stages and treating cancer with photodynamic therapy.

Biography

Ben Cailes is a Cardiologist and PhD fellow through the Austin Hospital in Melbourne and the University of Melbourne. He is a current recipient of both National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and National Heart Foundation (NHF) post-graduate scholarships. He has previously received the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) Trainee Research Award for Excellence in 2019 and was a co-author of research awarded runner-up in the CSANZ Imaging Prize in 2018. Ben’s PhD is exploring cirrhotic cardiomyopathy in patients with end-stage liver failure, with a focus on improving the diagnostic criteria for this poorly-defined condition and assessing novel non-invasive investigations that can be used to minimise cardiac perioperative risk in this vulnerable patient group.

Dr Gary Gan is a clinical and academic Heart Failure Cardiologist. Dr Gan is currently based in Sydney where he holds appointments across Westmead, Blacktown and Ryde Hospitla. He is the Director of Heart Failure Services at Westmead and Blacktown Hospital and the Clinical lead for Cardiac Imaging at Ryde Hospital. He is also the co-chair for the Emerging Leaders Heart Failure committee of the Asia Pacific Society of Cardiology.

Biography

Madiha Saiedi, a final year PhD student under the guidance of Professor Joseph Selvanayagam and Dr. Rebecca Perry, has carved a niche in medical research focusing on Advanced Cardiac Imaging in Anderson-Fabry Disease. Her academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology (Honours), leading to two summer vacation research scholarships in medical biotechnology and molecular and cellular neuroscience. These early experiences, one aimed at developing breast cancer therapeutics from marine sponges and the other exploring the RCAN1 gene's role in pancreatic beta cells, set the foundation for her honours degree with being awarded a scholarship. Since starting her PhD, Madiha has continued to pursue novel research with a commitment to advancing the understanding of the rare genetic disorder, Anderson-Fabry disease, through advanced cardiac imaging.
