Cardiopulmonary exercise testing: Aligning evidence with clinical practice

Ross Arena is Professor and Head of the Department of Physical at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Arena received his B.S. in Human Performance from Southern Connecticut State University in 1993. He went on to receive his M.S. in Physical Therapy in 1997 and Ph.D. in Physiology in 2001 from the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Arena is a Fellow of the American Heart Association, European Society of Cardiology, Royal Medical Society, and American College of Sports Medicine. He has led the successful implementation of several innovative healthy living initiatives in the academic, clinical, and community settings, most recently founding the Healthy Living for Pandemic Event Protection (HL-PIVOT) network. Dr. Arena’s scholarly interests include: 1) Exercise testing and training in patients diagnosed with cardiopulmonary disease/dysfunction; and 2) Healthy living initiatives that promote the healthspan. Dr. Arena has published extensively in these areas with over 1100 peer-reviewed publications, abstracts, and book chapters. In a recent publication, Dr. Arena was recognized as “the most prolific and co-cited co-author” in the field of cardiopulmonary exercise testing from 2002-2021 (www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fcvm.2022.982351/full).

Anna Rolleston is managing director of Manawaora The Centre for Health in Tauranga. Anna works in the kaupapa Maori health research space, challenging the dominance of western science and knowledge and providing pathways for the inclusion of matauranga Maori into health in Aotearoa. She holds a number of governance roles including co-chair of the CSANZ Indigenous Council.

Julie Redfern is a Professor of Public Health, a practising Physiotherapist and Director of the Institute for Evidence-Based Healthcare at Bond University. She has published over 250 manuscripts and 4 book chapters. She has > 15 years of experience delivering multidisciplinary and translational research and is an advocate for effective secondary prevention of CVD. Her research interest is focused on improving practice, reducing risk factors and implementing digital health innovation. Professor Redfern currently holds an NHMRC Investigator Grant (L2) and is currently CIA on NHMRC Synergy Grant (SOLVE-CHD), MRFF and NSW Health grants. She is Co-Chair of the Clinical and Preventative Cardiology Council and member of the Scientific Committee of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. She is also a member of the World Heart Federation and ACvA Science Committees.

Dr Niamh Chapman is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Sydney with a Heart Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. Niamh completed her PhD in 2021 at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research, University of Tasmania and maintains an ongoing collaborative connection to Tasmania, as Adjunct Senior Research Fellow. Niamh is Chair of the Australian Cardiovascular Alliance Emerging Leaders Committee and International Society of Hypertension Women in Hypertension Research Committee.

Novel exercise training strategies for women with CVD

Dr. Jennifer Reed, PhD, is the Program Chair of Cardiac Rehabilitation at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute as well as a Scientist and Director of the Exercise Physiology and Cardiovascular Health Lab. She is an Associate Professor in the School of Epidemiology and Public Health in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, Adjunct Professor in the School of Human Kinetics in the Faculty of Health Sciences, and a Registered Kinesiologist with the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario.
She has a passion for research examining the role of exercise and physical activity in preventing and managing cardiovascular disease, with a particular interest in women’s heart health. Her program focuses on the application of exercise in the prevention and management of atrial fibrillation; developing novel exercise training strategies for women with heart disease; and re-examining practical approaches to monitoring and prescribing exercise training in clinical populations.
Dr. Reed has been awarded more than $8 million in peer-reviewed research funding. Her research is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC), Cardiovascular Network of Canada (CANet), and Ministry of Research, Innovation and Science. She has further received several prestigious national-level awards including a New Investigator award in Clinical Rehabilitation from the CIHR, Emerging Research Leaders Initiative award from the HSFC, and Young Investigator award from the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP).
She is an investigator with the CANet; a member of the Canadian Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation, European Association of Preventive Cardiology, and European College of Sports Science; and an editorial board member for the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention. She has published more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts including those in Circulation, JAMA Network Open, and the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, and has given more than 70 invited presentations across the globe.
