Biography

Dr Al-Kaisey is a consultant cardiologist and electrophysiologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Western Health. He completed his PhD and electrophysiology fellowship at The Royal Melbourne Hospital under the supervision of Professor Jonathan Kalman and Professor Peter Kistler. His PhD studies focused on the impact of atrial fibrillation on cognitive function and psychological distress. He was awarded the Young Investigator award at CSANZ in 2021 and was the runner up Young investigator at APHRS in 2022. Following his PhD, he undertook a 12 months fellowship at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, UK under the mentorship of Professor Richard Schilling.

Biography

Julian is an integrative physiologist translating novel findings from animal models to humans. He was educated at the University of Birmingham (BSc (Hons) 1984) and University of London (PhD, 1987). Subsequently, between 1989-1994, he was a fellow at EI DuPont, Wilmington and University Washington, Seattle, US, and an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow (University of Göttingen, Germany). In 1994, he was awarded a British Heart Foundation Fellowship at the University of Bristol, UK. In 2017, he transferred to the University of Auckland, New Zealand, where he is Director of Manaaki Manawa (established 2019) – the Centre of Heart Research, and Co-Director of Pūtahi Manawa – Healthy Hearts of Aotearoa New Zealand (established 2021), which is the first national Centre of Research Excellence addressing equity in heart health through community-led research. His research focuses on the neural coupling between the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. His novel fundamental discoveries have resulted in first-in-human trials for treating neurogenic hypertension, sleep apnoea and heart failure. He is founder member and Chief Scientific Officer for Ceryx Medical Ltd. designing a novel bionic pacemaker for heart failure. He has 445 publications, ~24,600 citations and an h-index of 84. He was made Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand in 2021.

After completing his PhD, Bhupesh Pathik completed a two-year clinical fellowship in Pacing and Cardiac Electrophysiology at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, USA.

Dr Louise Segan is a Cardiologist and PhD fellow in electrophysiology at the Alfred Hospital and the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute. Dr Segan’s thesis focuses on optimising outcomes in patients with AF and heart failure and highlighting the role of preventive measures as an integral part of AF management. Her work has included development and validation of a lifestyle based clinical risk score for AF, which can be readily applied at the bedside to inform about the risk of AF development, focusing on modifiable risk factor management.

Dr David Chieng is a consultant electrophysiologist at the Alfred Hospital, and postdoctoral fellow at Monash University/ Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute. He completed his PhD in 2022 with the support of NHMRC, National Heart Foundation, and Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute Bright Sparks scholarships. He was the co-principal investigator of the CAPLA study, and principal investigator of the Hi-Lo HEAT and STALL HFpEF randomized trials. He has been awarded 22 prestigious young investigator prizes for his research, including the University of Melbourne Graham Brown Prize (2023), the Heart Rhythm Society Eric Prystowsky Fellows Clinical Research Award (2023), the Noel and Imelda Foster Prize for Cardiovascular Research (2022), the Paul Korner Medal for outstanding PhD achievements (2021), and the American College of Cardiology Christopher O'Connor Award for Outstanding Scholarship (2023). He is the recipient of a post-doctoral fellowship from the National Heart Foundation.
