Biography

Dr Karen Breen is a consultant haematologist with a specialist interest in Thrombosis and Haemostasis and is Clinical Director of Haematology and supporting services at Guys and St.Thomas’ NHS foundation Trust. She trained in Haematology in Ireland and moved to the UK to conduct research in Antiphospholipid syndrome leading to an MD. Her main area of clinical interest is in Thrombosis, she helping to set up and run a PERT service and works closely with the Venous vascular service in managing venous interventions at GSTT. She is currently involved in several clinical trials and in translational research in antiphospholipid syndrome.

Biography

Dr Paul Gardiner (known as Bugs) is a Specialist Anaesthetist at Auckland City Hospital and Allevia Hospitals (Epsom/Ascot), with extensive experience in public and private anaesthesia, intensive care, neurosurgery, and complex hepatobiliary surgery. His private anaesthesia practice includes neurosurgery, hepatobiliary surgery, general surgery, and major spinal surgery. He has been a Specialist Anaesthetist at Auckland City Hospital since 2008 and is jointly trained in intensive care medicine. Previously, he served for a decade as an Intensivist in the Department of Critical Care Medicine at Auckland City Hospital, providing general, neurological, and liver transplant intensive care. He is currently Chairman of the New Zealand Airway Leads Network and a member of the Board of Directors of Allevia Hospitals. His work spans clinical care, governance, quality improvement, and education, with interests in deteriorating patient systems, human factors, and advanced airway management.
