9:00 AM - 9:30 AM

Biography

Andrea Casey (she/her) is a proud Aboriginal woman with ties to both Tasmania through her grandmother’s family and Victoria through her grandfather. Andrea is a breast cancer survivor who is passionate about cancer screening and early detection, particularly in the First Nations community. She is part of the Breast Cancer Network Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Reference Group. She is a Breast Screen Victoria ambassador and has hosted events to raise money for BreastWest at Western Health. Previously Andrea worked as Aboriginal Liaison Officer at Cancer Council Victoria for 4 years, going out into regional, rural, and urban communities to promote breast, bowel and cervical cancer screening, and HPV vaccination. In this role Andrea also educated First Nations community, Aboriginal Health Workers, and other clinicians about cancer screening. In March 2021 she started at Peter Mac as Aboriginal Support Project Officer. Since then, Andrea has learnt new skills from Jay, the AHLO, and now also backfills the Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer role at Peter Mac when necessary. This provides her with much needed connection with community. Andrea is passionate about educating healthcare professionals about the cultural needs of First Nations patients, how to provide culturally safe and appropriate care, and how to be an ally. Through Andrea’s work on Peter Mac’s Reconciliation Action Plan, she has opportunities to highlight the needs of First Nations community through ensuring that Peter Mac is as culturally safe and responsive as possible.
