Biography

Jenny Couper is a clinician researcher and paediatric endocrinologist. She is Head of the Discipline of Paediatrics, University of Adelaide and was Head of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Department, Women’s and Children’s Hospital, SA. She leads the Australian early life at-risk cohort (ENDIA study www.endia.org.au) and the Breakthrough T1D Australian monitoring program of children with early type 1 diabetes. She co-chairs the ISPAD early type 1` diabetes advisory group and is a co –author of international guidelines for the management of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents.

Biography

Professor Tom Kay is the Director of St Vincent’s Institute of Medical Research (SVI) in Melbourne, and Chair of the Australian Type 1 Diabetes Immunotherapy Collaborative. He has been a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences since 2016. He is President of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association (IPITA) and Past President of The Immunology of Diabetes Society (IDS). He is an Honorary Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne and is a clinician-scientist with expertise in endocrinology and clinical immunology. His work focuses on islet transplantation and immunotherapy with the aim to challenge insulin replacement therapy for diabetes by introducing new treatments based on disease mechanisms.

Biography

P. Toby Coates MD PhD is the Director of Kidney, Pancreas and Islet Transplantation at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Professor at the University of Adelaide. He is a translational clinician scientist and transplant nephrologist. He was a foundation member of the Australian Islet Consortium in 2006. In 2017 his team undertook Australia’s first paediatric total pancreatectomy and islet auto transplant (TP-IAT) for Hereditary Pancreatitis in Adelaide. He founded Beta Cell Technologies for the development of alternative sites for islet cell transplantation. He is the principal investigator in the HEPATA study (Hereditary Pancreatitis and Islet Auto Transplantation Trials in Australia).

Role of Adjunct Therapies in Type 1 Diabetes Management

Biography

Dr Jennifer Snaith is clinical researcher and Endocrinologist who leads the Diabetes in Youth service at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney. Her research interest is the intersection between type 1 diabetes, metabolic and cardiovascular health. She was awarded the UNSW Dean’s Award for her PhD, a study of the effect of metformin on muscle and liver insulin resistance in type 1 diabetes, assessed using hyperinsulinaemic-euglycaemic clamps. She is involved in the conduct of adjunctive therapies clinical trials in type 1 diabetes through the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. Active or completed trials include the INTIMET study (metformin), RESET1 (semaglutide) and TIRTLE1 (tirzepatide). Jen’s post-doctoral work is a supported by Breakthrough T1D Australia.
