Biography

Dr Brandon completed her PhD in 2007 at the University of New South Wales. She then did her postdoc at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research with Profs. Ted Kraegen and Gregory Cooney investigating the development of obesity and insulin resistance, with particular focus on nutritional and genetic models. In 2016 she moved to the University of Sydney to continue this research theme and in 2019 joined the group of Prof. Stephen Simpson to investigate the role of nutrition in metabolic health and aging.

Biography

Kat Aston-Mourney is a researcher passionate about finding better treatments and cures for diabetes, and training our next generation of researchers and clinicians. Kat obtained her PhD in Medical Research from the University of Melbourne in 2007 and undertook a 5-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA before relocating her research program to Deakin University School of Medicine in 2011. She currently heads the Islet Biology Research Laboratory supervising several honours and PhD candidates and is the deputy theme lead for Molecular Medicine within the Institute of Mental and Physical Health and Clinical Translation (IMPACT). Kat is also a lecturer in Medical Science and is the Director of Graduate Research for Deakin’s Faculty of Health. Kat has received numerous awards for her research and leadership throughout her career, including the ADS Pincas Taft Young Investigator award during her PhD.

Biography

Professor Jodie Dodd is an obstetrician, maternal fetal medicine specialist and Practitioner Fellow at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital and a clinical researcher at the University of Adelaide. She leads a multi-disciplinary research group including students, and is an international authority on obesity during pregnancy and early life approaches to obesity prevention. Professor Dodd's research is driven to ensure that care for women and their infant’s is effective, and that treatment benefits outweigh harms. Randomised trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses remain the gold standard research methodology for establishing the effects of different forms of care.

Biography

Dr Small completed his PhD in 2018 at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research through the University of New South Wales under the supervision of Prof. Gregory Cooney investigating Mechanisms of lipid induced insulin resistance in skeletal muscle.He then did his postdoc at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark with Prof. Juleen Zierath and Prof. Romain Barres investigating the link between circadian rhythms and energy metabolism. In 2023 he moved to the University of Sydney to continue research into energy metabolism, insulin action and the impact of diet on healthy ageing within the groups of A/Prof. Carsten Schmitz-Peiffer and Prof. Stephen Simpson.
