Perioperative diabetes management-international perspective

Professor Ketan Dhatariya graduated from the University of London in 1991 and did his diabetes and endocrinology training in and around London. He was also a part time General Practitioner and took some time out of his training to spend a year doing intensive care medicine and anaesthetics. After finishing his training in 2001 he went to do a research fellowship in endocrinology at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. He was appointed as a consultant in diabetes, endocrinology and general medicine at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital in 2004 and appointed as an Honorary Professor of Medicine at the University of East Anglia in 2019.
He has several national roles in the UK. He is the Chair of the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists and was also the Chair of the Joint British Diabetes Societies Inpatient Care Group, we he led the revision of most of the inpatient guidelines. He is the Chair of the Examining Board for the UK Specialist Clinical Exam in Diabetes and Endocrinology. He is the Section Co-editor for diabetes for www.endotext.org. He is also the Chair of the 2027 International Working Group for the Diabetic Foot guideline writing group for wound healing.
Professor Dhatariya has over 220 peer reviewed publications and has published over 25 book chapters on inpatient diabetes, peri-operative diabetes care or on the diabetic foot. The website www.endotext.com has named him as the world’s top expert in diabetic ketoacidosis, and in the top 10 for hyperglycaemia.

Associate Professor Glynis Ross has been Lead Endocrinologist of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Diabetes and Pregnancy service for over 35 years and does outreach work in Central West NSW. Since 2016 she has been a Diabetes Australia Board Director. Glynis was on ADS Council from 2012-2020 (President 2018-2020) and on ADIPS Council for 2 x 8 year terms (President 2008-2010). Her major interests are in diabetes inpatient care, diabetes technology, pregnancy, health professional education and diabetes advocacy. She was Chair of the Joint Working Party that developed the 2020 ADS-ANZCA Perioperative Diabetes and Hyperglycaemia Guidelines(Adults.) Glynis is involved in many State and National diabetes working parties.

Peter is a Senior Staff Specialist in Endocrinology and Director of Clinical Pharmacology at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.
He has led the Queensland Inpatient Diabetes Survey (QUIDS) since its inception in 2019 and is working with the Australasian Diabetes Society to establish the first Australia-wide inpatient diabetes audit of practice (Aus-NADIA). Peter remains passionate about improving the inpatient management of patients with diabetes.

The South Australia Inpatient Diabetes Survey- experience and insights

Dr Rebecca Munt is a registered nurse with a PhD that explored the self-management experiences of people living with type 1 diabetes while in hospital. Rebecca currently is employed as a Senior Research Fellow in SAHMRI and is leading the implementation and evaluation of the Aboriginal Diabetes Workforce Training study. Rebecca has undertaken a number of research projects in the area of diabetes and disseminated the research findings at local, national and international conferences and in peer reviewed publications. She is a member on several committees with the peak national diabetes bodies in Australia.

Tony is the Director of the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne and Professor of Medicine with the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University.
Tony’s research interests are around models of care for management of diabetes. He has over 150 publications and has attracted over $12 million in research funding. Tony was awarded the Ranji and Amara Wikramanayake Clinical Diabetes Research Award in 2022. His innovated model of care for management of type 2 diabetes was voted the top innovation across Australia at the Health Round Table in 2024.
Tony is immediate past President of the Australian Diabetes Society.
