Identifying new Hybrid Insulin Peptides (HIPs) recognized by human islet infiltrating CD4+ T cells

1:15 PM - 1:30 PM

Abstract

Biography

After completing PhD in Life-Sciences in India, I moved USA and did postdoc at Texas Tech university on T cell immunosuppression biology during bacterial infection and cancer. Then I migrated to Australia and join T cell Human Immunology lab in SVI, currently focussing on antigens ‘seen’ by auto-reactive T cells.
Doc Amelia Fotheringham
Research Officer
Mater Research - University of Queensland

Targeting RAGE using an oral antagonist to prevent Type 1 diabetes in NOD mice

1:30 PM - 1:45 PM

Abstract

Biography

Dr Buckle has an expertise in T cells immunology, tolerance and animal models of type 1 diabetes. She now works under the mentorship of Prof Forbes and focuses on the development of preventative strategies for type 1 diabetes.
Dr Michael Huang
Senior Research Fellow
NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre / Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute

Mitochondrial Copy Number in Blood and Organs of STZ-Induced T1D Rat with Metformin Treatment

1:45 PM - 2:00 PM

Abstract

Biography

Dr. Huang is a productive Early-Mid Career Senior Research Fellow with an international patent and 46 research outputs in renowned journals: PNAS USA, Redox Biology (h-index: 27, >15000 citations). His research focuses on the elucidation of mitochondrial perturbations in human heart diseases and innovative treatments.
Mr Thomas King
PhD Candidate
University of New South Wales

The apolipoprotein mimetic peptide, C-II-a, increases insulin content and improves glucose tolerance in mice with β-cell loss

2:00 PM - 2:15 PM

Abstract

Biography

Thomas is a third year PhD candidate at UNSW Sydney researching apolipoprotein mimetic peptides and their role as a therapeutic intervention in Type 1 Diabetes.
Miss Alexandra Mahoney
PhD Student
University of Technology Sydney

Gene Expression in Insulin-expressing Liver Cells Transduced with Integrating Adeno-Associated-Vector

2:15 PM - 2:30 PM

Abstract

Biography

Alexandra Mahoney is a 3rd year PhD student investigating a liver-directed gene therapy for Type 1 Diabetes treatment. Alexandra hopes to use a clinically applicable lentiviral-vector to develop insulin-producing cells from liver cells. With this research, Alexandra is hoping to help alleviate economic and lifestyle burdens of Type 1 Diabetes.
Dr Prerak Trivedi
Postdoctoral Fellow
St Vincent's Institute of Medical Research

Identifying features of lymphocytes in newly diagnosed T1D BANDIT participants after treatment with the JAK inhibitor baricitinib

2:30 PM - 2:45 PM

Abstract

Biography

Dr. Prerak Trivedi is a postdoctoral fellow in the Immunology and Diabetes unit led by Prof. Helen Thomas and Prof Tom Kay at the St Vincent's Institute of Medical Research, Melbourne. He is trying to understand how dysregulation of molecular pathways in immune cells leads to type 1 diabetes.
Mr Chenxu Yan
Phd Student
Garvan Institute of Medical Research

The Effect of Thermogenic Adipose Tissue on β-Cell Function

2:45 PM - 3:00 PM

Abstract

Biography

Chenxu (Loki) Yan graduated from UNSW with a Bachelor's degree in 2019, majoring in neuroscience and finance. In 2017, he joined A/Prof Yanchuan Shi's group as a visiting student and currently, he is a second-year PhD student. His project is about the crosstalk between the brain, fat and islets.
