Biography

PROFESSOR DON CHISHOLM MB, BS, D Sc, FRACP, AO Don Chisholm was involved in diabetes research and clinical practice for over 50 years and published >250 original papers or reviews/editorials, with >19000 citations. He was Professor of Endocrinology at St Vincent's Hospital Sydney, the University of NSW and at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research (where he was for a long time Head of the Diabetes and Metabolism Program). He was President of the Australian Diabetes Society (ADS,1984-86), Vice President (1997-2003) and Chairman of the Congress Program Committee (1985-88) of the International Diabetes Federation and a Councillor of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (1986-95). He was a National Board member of St Vincent’s Health Australia (1996-2005) and chair of the National Diabetes Strategy Group of the Commonwealth Department of Health (2001-2005). He has been awarded the College Medal by the RACP, the Kellion Award by the ADS, a D. Sc. By UNSW and in 1999 was made an Officer in the Order of Australia.

Biography

Professor Stephen Colagiuri AO is Professor of Metabolic Health and Director of The Boden Institute at the University of Sydney. He is also Co-Director, World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on Physical Activity, Nutrition and Obesity. His research interests focus on the development and implementation of evidence-based guidelines, cardiometabolic and vascular risk assessment, diabetes screening and prevention, economic aspects of diabetes and obesity, and diabetes care delivery. He has previously served as President of the Australian Diabetes Society and Chair of the International Diabetes Federation Task Force on Clinical Guidelines. He is a member of the Diabetes Expert Advisory Committee of the Commonwealth Department of Health and an advisor on diabetes to the World Health Organization. Professor Colagiuri is currently Editor-in-Chief of the IDF journal, Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, and has published over 200 scientific papers.

Biography

Professor Jenny Gunton is the Director of the Centre for Diabetes and Obesity Research at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research (WIMR) and is Chair of Medicine at Westmead Hospital, University of Sydney. Jenny received her PhD from the University of Sydney and completed her post-doctoral fellowship in Ron Kahn’s lab at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School. Jenny’s research interests include diabetes, obesity, and vitamin D. She is particularly interested in the intersection of transcription factors and their regulation by nutrients including iron and Vitamin D.

Biography

Professor Anthony Russell (MBBS PhD FRACP) has been Director of Diabetes and Endocrinology, Alfred Health, Melbourne and Professor of Medicine with the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University since Jan 2022. Professor Russell was previously the Director of Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane from 2005 to 2021. Professor Russell has led innovative projects to provide new models of care for people with diabetes. He has implemented the “Beacon” practice model, providing integrated care for patients with complex Type 2 diabetes in the community with up-skilled GPs and performed a proof-of-concept of eConsultations. He has initiated a Telehealth service, delivering diabetes services to rural and remote indigenous and non-indigenous communities across QLD. He sits on the steering committees for Diabetes Feet Australia and the National Association ofDiabetes Centres. Professor Anthony Russell is the current President of the Australian Diabetes Society.
