Navigating the deep: A lived experience of Type 1 diabetes, mental illness and Australian primary health care

Biography

Jane is a dedicated health care professional who has embarked on a journey into diabetes management and education. With a personal experience of having Type 1 diabetes for 27 years, Jane’s goal to make a positive impact on both people living with diabetes and people in her community has led to a fulfilling career. With a passion for nursing starting over 20 years ago following her experiences with excellent nurse CDE’s, Jane has enjoyed providing holistic care and building genuine connections in primary care for over a decade. Driven by a passion to build her skills, Jane pursued post graduate qualifications in diabetes education and management. Recently completing a graduate diploma in diabetes education, Jane is continuing her learning and working towards becoming a CDE. Beyond her nursing role, Jane is eager to share her experiences and insights with a broader audience. Her first time at the ADC, Jane is honoured to be presenting with such experienced professionals.

Diabetes Distress - assessing from a GP perspective. An overview of the challenges of assessing mental health in general practice

Biography

Ralph Audehm is a general practitioner who graduated from Melbourne University in 1984 and has worked for over 30 years in general practice. He is experienced in managing all types of patients. He obtained a Diploma from the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1987 and is an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of General Practice, University of Melbourne. He has had a long-standing interest in the management of chronic conditions in General Practice especially diabetes and heart disease. He enjoys teaching medical students, GP registrars and General Practitioners. He is an honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of General Practice, University of Melbourne.

Assessing and addressing diabetes distress during type 2 diabetes care in general practice

Biography

Rita McMorrow is a Lecturer in Primary Care and Research Fellow at the Department of General Practice and Primary Care at The University of Melbourne. She works part-time in general practice in Parkville. Rita completed her PhD in July 2023 which focused on the design and implementation of a digital health solution in general practice to support diabetes distress assessment and management in people with type 2 diabetes in general practice.

"The time is well spent if you stop and listen": Identifying emotional problems in diabetes, and overcoming barriers to care

Biography

Jennifer Halliday is a Research Fellow and PhD candidate at the Australian Centre for Behavioural Research in Diabetes. Jennifer’s research has focused on the psychological well-being of adults with diabetes; barriers and enablers to screening for emotional problems in routine diabetes care; and upskilling health professionals in providing support for diabetes distress. She is an author of the NDSS Diabetes and Emotional Health practical guide and toolkit. She is also the Project Manager for HypoPAST (Hypoglycaemia Prevention, Awareness of Symptoms, and Treatment), a fully online psycho-educational program designed to reduce fear of hypoglycaemia through improved prevention and management of hypoglycaemia.

Assessing Diabetes Distress; putting it into practice from A Dibetes Educators perspective.

Biography

Michelle has been a Registered Nurse for 25 years and a Credentialled Diabetes Educator for 20 years. Endorsed as a Nurse Practitioner in 2022. Michelle obtained her Bachelor of Science (Nursing) at the University of Tasmania. Since then in an endeavour to ensure excellence both personally and professionally she has also completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Health Science (Diabetes Education) Curtin University, Graduate Diploma of Nutrition Management at Deakin University and has recently completed Masters of Nursing Practice at Deakin University. Michelle has worked as a Diabetes Educator in the hospital, community and indigenous health, general practice and currently in private practice. Michelle is passionate about helping people with diabetes to see the potential of health improvements through small changes. Supporting people to use the resources available to them to better understand Diabetes. Empowering the person with diabetes to manage the everyday challenges and prevent long term complications.
