Mr Harry Cutler
PhD Candidate
University of Sydney
Leveraging gene-environment interactions to identify regulators of diet-induced metabolic disease and the contributions of individual tissues
10:00 AM - 10:15 AMBiography
Harry graduated from the University of Sydney at the end of 2021 with a First Class Bachelor of Science (Honours) under Professor David James. His continuing research interests lie in explicating the mechanisms underlying primary metabolic defects, and in understanding how gene-environment interactions influence susceptibility to metabolic disease.
Dr Alexis Diaz-Vegas
Postdoctoral Fellow
University of Sydney
Mitochondrial electron transport chain, Ceramide and Coenzyme Q are linked in a pathway that drives Insulin Resistance in Skeletal Muscle.
10:15 AM - 10:30 AMBiography
Dr. Diaz-Vegas is a cell biologist focused on dissecting the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in metabolic diseases. Graduating with a PhD from The University of Chile in 2018, Diaz-Vegas employed diverse cell and molecular biology tools in both cell and animal models. This research investigated the effects of mitochondrial calcium uptake, dynamics, and mitophagy on muscle degeneration and insulin signaling in skeletal muscle. In 2019, Dr. Diaz-Vegas joined the University of Sydney for postdoctoral training under the guidance of Professor David James. During this time, he identified an Insulin Resistance Pathway in which the lipid ceramide accumulates in mitochondria, leading to the disruption of Complex 1, decreased mitochondrial Coenzyme Q levels, heightened production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species, and subsequent insulin resistance. This discovery marks a significant advancement in our comprehension of metabolic diseases.

Investigating Citrus Bioflavonoid Hesperidin as a novel DPP-4 inhibitor in a mouse model of metabolic syndrome.
10:45 AM - 11:00 AMBiography
The presenter Abdulsatar Jamal is a Masters student and Latrobe University. Abdulsatar is a high achieving student who aims to explore preventative therapeutics against the development of diabetes. His research focuses on citrus bioflavonoid, hesperidin as a DPP-4 inhibitor. Associate professor Hayder Al-Aubaidy is the primary supervisor in this investigation.
Miss Stephanie O'Hara
PhD Student
University of Adelaide
Characterising the impact of high-fat, high-sugar feeding in mice from before pregnancy until weaning to understand offspring type 2 diabetes risk
11:00 AM - 11:15 AMBiography
Stephanie O’Hara is a second year PhD student at the University of Adelaide in Dr Lisa Nicholas's Epigenetics in Diabetes Group at the University of Adelaide, where she is investigating the role of maternal obesity in driving type two diabetes risk in offspring.
Dr Adam Rose
Senior Research Fellow
Monash University
Dietary amino acid restriction promotes type 2 diabetes remission independent of sex and fibroblast growth factor 21
11:15 AM - 11:30 AMBiography
Dr Adam Rose is a Senior Research Fellow and Head of the Nutrient Metabolism and Signalling Laboratory within the Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as part of the Biomedicine Discovery Institute Metabolism, Diabetes and Obesity Program.
Mr Jonathan Scavuzzo
Phd Candidate
University of Sydney
Dissection of insulin action with a systems based approach reveals a novel PIP3 -dependent Mechanism of ERK activation
11:30 AM - 11:45 AMBiography
Jonathan Scavuzzo is a PhD candidate in the Metabolic Systems Biology Group headed by Professor David James, based in the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney. He completed his Bsc (Advanced) (Honours I) in 2019 majoring in Biochemistry and currently studies novel mechanisms of insulin action.
Mr Qi Wu
Phd Student
Garvan Institute
Short-term salt intake boosts cold tolerance and glucose metabolism
11:45 AM - 12:00 PMBiography
Kevin is a PhD student who first joined A/P Shi's lab as a visiting student in 2019. He has been generating valuable data and making exciting discoveries in the field of obesity and diabetes. The data he presents is the result of his work conducted during his honours study.
