Biography
Dr Chinmay Marathe is a staff specialist endocrinologist at the Royal Adelaide
Hospital (RAH) and the Diabetes Lead of the RAH Multi-Disciplinary Diabetic Foot
Service. He is also a post-doctoral fellow at the Faculty of Health and Medical
Sciences, Adelaide Medical School, University of Adelaide.
Dr Marathe graduated from India in 2003 (MBBS, University of Nagpur). He undertook
basic physician training in the UK and Australia followed by specialist training in
diabetes and endocrinology at the Royal Adelaide and The Queen Elizabeth
Hospitals (2013-2015). His PhD work, under the supervision of Prof Michael Horowitz,
evaluated the relationships between incretins (GLP-1 and GIP), gastric emptying and
postprandial glycaemia in diabetes. He was awarded the University of Adelaide
Dean’s Commendation and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP)
Trainee Research award for his PhD dissertation in 2016 (University of Adelaide). He
subsequently undertook clinical and research postdoctoral training in the United
Kingdom (King’s College London, 2016-2017).
Dr Marathe is a past recipient of numerous prestigious awards including the
Australian Diabetes Society Skip-Martin Fellowship, the NHMRC Early Career
Fellowship and Diabetes UK’s “Innnovators in Diabetes” iDia Fellowship. He holds
membership of the American Diabetes Association, European Society for the Study
of Diabetes, Diabetes UK and the Australian Diabetes Society.
Dr Marathe maintains an active interest in diabetes research and publishes regularly
in international peer-reviewed journals.
Dr Alicia Chan

Biography
Dr Alicia Chan is a clinical and academic Cardiologist who specialises in heart failure and implantable devices therapy. She has also a keen interest in heart disease in women. Dr Alicia Chan graduated from the University of Adelaide in 2000 and completed her clinical cardiology training at The Queen Elizabeth and Lyell McEwin Health Hospitals. She undertook further training at The New Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Scotland and a postdoctoral fellowship in implantable devices therapy at the University of Calgary, Canada. Her academic interests include heart disease in women, having completed her PhD (Dean’s list 2013) entitled “Cardiovascular Risk Assessment in Women: Impact of Ageing, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and Menopause on Nitric Oxide Signalling” and also heart failure mechanisms and therapeutics, with international presentations and publications in peer-reviewed journals in these fields. She is the current Chair of Cardiac Society ANZ (CSANZ) SA branch and Cardiology Females in SA (CAFE-SA, CSANZ), and continues to be active in teaching through the University of Adelaide.
