Details

According to UNESCO’s 2019 Global Education Monitoring Report, Asia Pacific is home to the largest group of refugees and displaced people of any region in the world. The question remains for how higher education can provide accessible university pathways for these students. One outcome of wrestling with this question is a unique collaboration lead by Western Sydney University (WSU), University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), and the Institute of International Education (IIE). Through this partnership, an effective method has been developed to bridge the gap between talented displaced students and viable higher education degree options. The focus of this multisector partnership is to provide a university admission pathway by first identifying talented displaced students within the region, which is through relational investments with grassroot NGOs. Once these local partnerships have been established, IIE works closely with these organizations to identify suitable individuals to participate in this education journey. After the students have completed their preparation through IIE’s support, WSU and UEH engage in a selection process of students to study at WSU’s Vietnam campus in collaboration with UEH. Tuition scholarships, living stipends and internships are organised and supported by WSU, UEH, and the local business community. Learning Objectives: • Better understanding of the displaced student situation in Asia Pacific and the barriers to higher education • Ability to identify the factors that may contribute to the success of this multisector collaboration and processes used to achieve displaced student placements at universities • Understand the voices of the students who have participated in this process, detailing their journey from the camp to campus and their transformation thus far and hope for the future Target Audience: Senior leadership of the university, student services, international partnerships, SDGs, community engagement, government agencies, NGOs Target Audience Level: Beginner, Intermediate
