Details

Higher education institutions across the Asia-Pacific are facing the challenges of an ongoing pandemic, climate change impacts, and rising student preferences for more flexible modes of learning (Li et al., 2021). In this changing environment, implementing innovative delivery models grounded in evidence-based pedagogical practice may be a key to attracting students and bolstering their academic success sustainably and at scale. This presentation explores how ‘immersive scheduling’ (Richmond et al., 2015; Turner et al., 2021) can improve the achievement and satisfaction of diverse cohorts of students in higher education. Immersive delivery models diverge from the traditional 13-week semester by engaging students in one or two units at a time over shorter periods of study. This presentation outlines the pedagogical principles behind a 6-week model of immersive learning, including the importance of active, guided pedagogies in blended learning environments. Drawing on large-scale studies from the Asia-Pacific (Goode et al., 2022; Loton et al., 2022), as well as more recent data from one regional Australian university, the presentation then examines how the model is influencing student success and satisfaction across a range of cohorts, including: varied disciplines and modes of study, as well as for international, domestic, commencing, and continuing students. Learning Objectives: • Knowledge of the key pedagogical principles underpinning contemporary immersive scheduling approaches in higher education internationally • Knowledge of current evidence of impact from institutions in the Asia-Pacific and internationally, including how immersive scheduling affects different cohorts across study modes, fields of study (disciplines), and for international, domestic, commencing and continuing cohorts • Skills on how to assess the impact of curriculum reform on student achievement and experience using quantitative institutional data Target Audience: Higher education management, Higher Education Policy writers, Higher Education curriculum developers/designers, Higher Education lecturers/teachers, Higher Education researchers. Target Audience Level: Intermediate
