Details

The idea for this panel was inspired by the legacy of the late visionary international educator Josef Mestenhauser, who was passionate about the ’learning potential’ of international education for all students, academics, and society. The first paper by Betty Leask will discuss approaches to internationalising courses at home that will assist all students to develop the knowledge, skills, and values needed to contribute positively to their local communities in a globalised world. The second paper by Deborah Pembleton critically examines short-term study abroad programs which make international educational opportunities accessible to more students as they require less financial and time commitment than traditional, longer-term programs. This paper discusses how the diversity of Asian countries provides significant opportunities for students to gain impactful experiences and to develop intercultural competence. Given considerable educational support for students, short-term study abroad programs have a stronger opportunity for sustainability and enhanced inclusiveness. The final paper by Gerald Fry examines alternative typically non-credit experiential international/intercultural internship opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region with comparative case studies of Volunteers in Asia, Princeton in Asia, and Yale in China. It concludes by proposing a dynamic new ASEAN Cooperation Corps with sustainable foundations. Learning Objectives: • Deeper understanding of approaches and strategies to engage all students in international and intercultural learning experiences at home. • Enhanced awareness of how to increase the impact and sustainability of short-term study abroad in the Asia-Pacific region. • Improved knowledge of the potential of experiential internship opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region. Target Audience: Our target audience are all those engaged in promoting the internationalisation of higher education. It is intended to be valuable for practitioners, scholars, and administrators of international education. Target Audience Level: Intermediate, Advanced
