Details

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals provide education leaders with a framework to address the impact of study abroad programmes in higher education. Using the UN’s SDGs as a framework, this presentation will explore the challenges and opportunities amidst the intersection of internationalization and indigenization in the context of higher education in British Columbia, Canada as part of the broader Asia-Pacific region. Linkages between the processes of Internationalization and Indigenization have been a recent focus of the post-secondary sector within British Columbia. Both local and regional case studies will be presented as context to the Asia-Pacific region. Finally, potential for Asia-Pacific intersection opportunities will be explored. Learning Objectives: • Increased awareness of the impact of colonization among Indigenous Peoples in Canada and access to higher education, and some approaches to reconciliation; • Increased understanding of the interplay of internationalization, decolonization and indigenization associated with study abroad; • Develop a broader understanding of changes in the BC higher education landscape in support of indigenous and non-indigenous learners, and possible extension to other regions of the Asia-Pacific.
