Details

Indonesia is expected to become the fourth largest economy in the world with the largest higher education system in South-East Asia. It has over 4000 Higher Education Institutions and over 8 million students. The ambition to internationalise the education system must overcome many challenges including a vast number of institutions and diversity in quality. This challenge is compounded by reduced mobility impacting on TNE activities due to covid disruption. Compared to its neighbours, Indonesian universities generally have a lower scale of inbound and outbound student mobility and international partnerships, which impacts performance in world rankings. This panel session presents case studies of partnerships that deliver programs which provide low-cost international experiences for students in-country. University of Newcastle shares perspectives on how mobility between developing countries through transnational education has presented challenges quite different to those facing students travelling between Australia and Indonesia. Binus University shares insights into how Binus manages its internationalisation activities and strives to provide international exposure to all students. Open University Indonesia shares how it has brought hundreds of low-cost international-standard courses to thousands of students through its Cyber Education Institute platform. Through different models, the panel demonstrates how internationalisation can be both widespread and sustainable. Learning Objectives: At the end of this panel session, participants will have gained: • An understanding of multiple approaches to internationalisation of students in Indonesia – transnational provision, curriculum collaboration and online. • Exposure to case studies, learning points and recommendations for action. • Ideas for Indonesian and foreign institutions to consider in carrying out international engagement that meets institutional goals for financial, environmental and ethical sustainability.
