Details
In its traditional form, transnational education has been conceptualised as the delivery of a “home” curriculum to a “destination” student body which is presumed to be a relatively homogenous group. However, with the rise of international education hubs such as Singapore, Bangkok and Jakarta, and South-South student mobility, this “destination” student body is becoming increasingly heterogeneous, and, arguably in a sector seeking greater sustainability, this trend will only intensify. The dilemma for the transnational education provider then is how to ensure the “home” curriculum is relevant and meaningful, when the diversity of its “destination” student body well exceeds its “home” (across ethnicity, socio-economic status, language background etc). Through presentation of data and interviews with practitioners across three ASEAN sites, this group session will consider how increasing student diversity is leading to greater local contextualisation of transnational provision in the dimensions of student services, academic content, and teaching styles. The group session will seek to illuminate a fundamental question faced by all transnational educators: is our role to provide a “home” education experience regardless of location or to contextualise the experience to meet the complex demands of highly diverse local student bodies. What is lost and what is gained through deep contextualisation?
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this group session, participants will have gained:
• An understanding of multiple approaches to teaching transnational curriculum to increasingly diverse student populations in Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.
• An ability to reflect upon the multiple factors practitioners consider when adapting and contextualizing curriculum.
