Comparison of Diverse University Freshmen Classroom Expectations

Susan Meiki is a lecturer in the Center for Language Education at Okayama University, Japan. Her research interests include cross cultural cognition, computer assisted language learning, and learner autonomy. Her research is sponsored by the Japan Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKEN) organization.

Abstract:
This poster presentation will show the results of an IPA code analysis of over 30 hours of interviews of university Freshmen in a newly established faculty at Okayama University. These interviews were conducted over a 2 1/2-year time frame. The analysis revealed some key differences of student’s perceived success in the classroom based on parameters such as classroom practices, and feedback. In addition, over the same period, there were noted changes in international student learning expectations and their attitudes concerning faculty and supportive services expected when entering the university. Some international students were reinterviewed after 2 years of matriculation and changes were noted relating to attitudes in their learning and possibilities for their future.

•Freshmen orientations should address student expectations, prepare them for diverse learning experience and address their future goals after graduation and the skills required.
•The recent pandemic has influenced foreign students’ attitudes towards teacher expectations, learner styles and how they want to learn.
•Faculty training in CLIL or other Content Language Learning methods can help international students that have had no experience in writing reports or presenting in English.

Virtual International Exchange Platform with a View to Sharing Microcredentials

Kay Berkling is a professor at the Cooperative State University, Germany. She is managing an online Computer Science Degree and teaches Software Engineering, Gamification and Games. Her research focuses on motivation and empowerment for students, to take charge of their own lifelong learning experience.

Abstract:
International exchange is not accessible for all students. Recently, the existing challenges have become more evident. Not only has the Covid-19 pandemic prevented many students from embarking on an international exchange experience, but for many students, family and economic conditions are also an obstacle. This project addresses particularly those students who, for various reasons, cannot afford long exchange phases. This group has often been neglected in non-European international cooperation.

Online lectures and communities have been well established during the lock-down phase. These can now form basis for expanding the experience to the international level. Integrating online lectures, virtual communities and integrate these with each other. Augmented with long-term and short-term physical exchanges, these personal acquaintances enrich the virtual community so all students in the "community" can benefit.

The scientific support provided by the project management ensures that virtual and physical acquaintances can be maximally consolidated to benefit the entire community. In the literature, this effect is called “community of practice”.

The outlined project makes an important contribution to sustainability concepts and necessities in the area of climate protection, while still offering a substantial intercultural experience.

•Exposure to ideas and brainstorming on joint Computer Science projects for programming AI-bots to support virtual multi-cultural/lingual communities.

Microcredentials as micro-mobilities

Juana Salas is a project coordinator at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, Germany where she takes care of the DAAD-funded project „Digital Mobil @ FH Bielefeld“, that combines the cross-cutting issues of internationalization and digitalization to incentivize digitally supported transnational teaching and prepare students for a globalized working environment.

Abstract:
Microcredentials are currently a much-discussed format for providing students with competencies relevant to their careers. In addition to larger degree programs, they offer students short learning experiences to acquire skills that may not be covered in the curriculum. They are thus an important means of learner-centered education. However, Bielefeld UAS sees further potential in Microcredentials in the international context. Therefore, it has linked microcredentials to the concept of virtual mobility and has opened some of its courses specifically to international students who can join them from home. In return, some of Bielefeld UAS’s partners have joined this effort, thereby creating a network of cooperating universities. This way, their students not only have a wider choice of high-quality courses, but also improve their intercultural competence and gain a low-threshold insight into studying abroad. Microcredentials, thus, can serve as a virtual micro-mobility format that not only complements curricula, but also enriches universities’ broader mobility programs.

Investigating changes in transnational higher education partnerships since COVID-19.

John has senior leadership experience and regularly engages with local and international stakeholders on a range of university-wide strategic initiatives. John provides support in the development of new and emerging TNHE partnerships. John’s research interests in international education includes: The development of TNHE in the Indo-Pacific and international student mobility.

Abstract:
Over the past decade, transnational higher education (TNHE) partnerships between higher education institutes (HEI) have increased worldwide. As a result, the scale and scope of TNHE activities across many countries have expanded. Population growth in (Indo-Pacific) countries such as, Indonesia is outstripping their capacity to deliver quality higher education, placing their higher education systems under immense pressure. In addition, since the start of the global pandemic (COVID-19), a new set of challenges and opportunities are emerging in the development of TNHE partnerships. My study examines the changes of COVID-19 on TNHE partnership development in Australia and Indonesia. The poster will provide a detailed account of the key themes emerging from my research with Australian and Indonesian participants from two HEI. Themes that are currently emerging include the shifting balance of power in TNHE partnerships, and the longer term social, political, and economic impacts of COVID-19 on TNHE partnerships. I will focus on three key stages of TNHE partnership development: (i) Pre-COVID-19, (ii) Since COVID-19 began, and I will provide insights into the (iii) innovations, opportunities and challenges emerging since COVID-19. As HEI negotiate a new international environment, the outcomes of my research will contribute to the development of these roadmaps.
