NAFSA’s International Education Professional Competencies 2.0, released in 2022, were developed amidst the backdrop of a global pandemic, a struggling global economy, and a global social justice movement that disrupted the higher education sector. This setting profoundly influenced this project and influenced the recognition of the cross-cutting nature of professional skills and abilities and deep connection to global learning values. More than a simple taxonomy of the competencies needed for career success, this tool emphasizes the need for professional competencies that includes cultural readiness, inclusion and equity, and innovation and versatility in both personal and professional development. Beyond expanding the academic body of work on international education administration, the competencies can be used as a tool for assessing current skill sets and identifying growth opportunities. It can also be considered a framework to identify and develop effective staff and faculty roles and deeper level of understanding core skills and abilities needed to engage in global learning. Biography

Dale LaFleur, PhD, is the senior director, academic affairs and internationalization at NAFSA: Association of International Educators. In this role, she leads the association’s strategies to support global learning and higher education internationalization by producing, planning, and delivering programs, publications and services in collaboration with the knowledge communities for International Education Leadership and Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship. Prior to joining NAFSA, Dale worked in the field of international education for over twenty years focusing on the development of institutional partnerships, student mobility and leadership programs at both the University of Arizona and Seattle University.

Biography

Joann Ng Hartmann is the Senior Impact Officer at NAFSA: Association of International Educators. In her capacity, Joann helps advance and facilitate intentional and impactful strategies to effect meaningful change at the organizational level and beyond. Additionally, she provides strategic staff leadership for professional development training, programs, services and publications related to international students and scholars. She also has oversight for maintaining effective regulatory practice relationships with federal agencies that regulate mobility and enrollment of international students and scholars.
