Details

The recent pandemic has significantly changed the way we live, study, work, and travel. As students from the United States once again engage in study abroad opportunities, all of us will be faced with new challenges and concerns when working with this population. This session will begin with a brief overview of U.S. laws pertaining to disability accommodations in higher education and their application to study abroad. We will examine how student needs and expectations have evolved over the course of the pandemic, focusing on “high-touch” advising and noted shifts in accommodation requests. Finally, we will share lessons learned and discuss processes implemented by the University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) to prepare and support students with disabilities who are studying abroad in the pandemic era and beyond. Learning Objectives: • Providing the audience with an overview of the Americans with Disabilities Act. • Identifying pandemic-era student needs, including advising and support. • Sharing lessons learned and processes to address student expectations and needs in a sustainable manner. Target Audience: This session is designed for program coordinators who work with students from the U.S. and/or handle disability accommodation requests. However, anyone interested in this topic is welcome to attend. Target Audience Level: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
