Details

In an increasingly globalizing world and economic competition, higher education has been required to provide human resources that are able to thrive in such an environment. Accordingly, Japan witnesses a rapid increase in the number of those who study abroad. This trend, however, foreshadows students’ implicit perceptions of studying abroad. While countries in the West remain popular destinations, those who choose Asia are limited. Prior studies mainly focus on relationships between the West and East. This study, on the other hand, sheds light on the East-East perceptions. In other words, it analyses how Japanese students consider studying in other Asian countries. In addition to push-pull factors revealed in previous studies, the current research examines ideological reasons lying in students’ perceptions. To do so, it employs mixed methods; First, it conducts a survey for 695 university students to present reasons why they do or don’t choose Asia. Second, it also performs interviews to complement the quantitative result by revealing why those reasons are linked to students’ decisions. By exploring the mechanism surrounding the decision to study in Asia, this study serves as a first step to remove epistemological obstacles in studying in Asia. Learning Objectives: • Both practical and epistemological factors that promote and prevent studying in Asia: Besides practical factors such as the existence of English-medium programmes, this study reveals underlying, epistemological reasons why some students choose (or don’t choose) Asia as a destination • Students’ intra-Asia perceptions: While a few studies clarify perceptions of students in the West toward Asia, this study focuses on those of students in Asia toward other Asian countries • How to recruit students from other Asian countries: By understanding these factors and mechanism thereof, attendees will be able to contrive how to brand their universities and countries where their universities are as well as how to change students’ perceptions. Target Audience: Type of areas of working: Recruitment, Public relations Type of areas of interest: Student mobility, Internationalisation, Post-colonial perspectives Target Audience Level: Intermediate, Advanced
