Virtual experience has been used as a short-term solution during times of restricted mobility – but how can we leverage what we have learned through these solutions to create accessible and sustainable global learning opportunities for our students? The Global Classroom Initiative (GCI) offers course-based international experiential learning that fosters student engagement and innovative institutional partnerships. The GCI aims to bring virtual and hybrid experience and perspective into curricular activities, to make international experience accessible to all students, addressing issues of access and sustainability of traditional models of international mobility.
Participants will be introduced to the University of Toronto’s GCI, highlighting how the model can be adopted to meet international mobility and global education goals at institutions across the Asia-Pacific region. Through the University of Toronto case study, examples of how this model can be used to explore innovations in new partnerships, such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the U.S., expanding partnerships in Africa and Asia-Pacific and to support student engagement when physical travel is not desired or possible. This session discusses the successes and challenges of the initiative, and shares best practices and lessons learned that attendees are able to apply and integrate into their international education programming.
