Details

With a growing focus on decolonizing the curriculum in international education, the global pandemic has also reinforced the trend to localisation in the international operations of many universities. As such, it is now a common business model for universities to establish market presence abroad, thereby ensuring greater "proximity" with the countries where the institution is seeking to engage, and adopting an approach to international operations which is more respectful of intercultural differences. This session will explore the different business models in play for universities to ensure greater market presence in the Asia-Pacific, from fly in-fly out recruitment, to agents and in-country representation, to transnational education partnerships and branch campuses, and the establishment of global hubs. Taking University College Dublin and Swinburne University of Technology as examples, it will provide tangible examples of how Irish and Australian universities use their regional branch campuses, representative offices and transnational education sites in various Asia-Pacific countries to support different elements of their strategies. The session will also outline elements of back-room operations which Swinburne is now placing in the region. With intentionality in the re-design of business models for the 21st century, questions of casual colonialism, market proximity and sustainability will be explored. Learning Objectives: • Participants will gain a greater understanding of the range of business models in place for the management of international operations abroad • Participants will be encouraged to reflect on the business models which might suit their institution • Participants will gain insights into potential colonialism in international operations and the opportunities for co-creation in new business models. Target Audience: Attendees at this session will be in leadership or senior marketing/recruitment or partnership roles in their institution, either within an International Office or more broadly. Target Audience Level: Intermediate
