Details

International higher education has traditionally involved recruiting wealthy students from the poor South to the rich North, charging high fees to cross-subsidise the world’s leading universities. Often perceived as a form neo-colonialism, export education has come at a heavy environmental cost, with student mobility flows adding massively to the sector’s global carbon footprint. This presentation considers how international higher education can be reimagined and re-engineered to contribute positively, rather than negatively, to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It highlights the scale of the challenges involved in rethinking the business model of exporting universities in the North and suggests radical solutions aimed at making higher education more accessible, equitable and environmentally sustainable. Drawing on the experience of the University of Limerick, where the strategic plan has been reconceptualised to align the University’s core activities with the SDGs and to promote equity and global access to higher education, the presentation will explore the power of transnational education (TNE) partnerships to create a new fairer and more sustainable higher education landscape. Learning Objectives: • Challenging attendees to confront the reality of their traditional business model • Understanding the real benefits and costs of international student mobility • Inspiring attendees to reimagine the future of internationalisation at their own institutions Target Audience: Areas of work: those working in international student recruitment and exchange, international partnership development and management, and transnational education. Areas of interest: those interested in the internationalisation of higher education, TNE, SDGs. Target Audience Level: Beginner, Intermediate
