Details

In 2018, the University of Victoria (UVic) in Canada partnered with Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Training Centre (SEAMEO-RETRAC) in Vietnam as part of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship program, where UVic co-op students complete co-operative education work terms (or internships) at SEAMEO-RETRAC. Students have participated in conference planning, staff training, student engagement at schools, and multiple projects that have helped develop their professional competencies, including a deep understanding of diverse cultures, traditions, levels of development, etc. that exist between the two countries. Intercultural competency development has been a strong outcome for this program. We will discuss: • student work terms that enhance their employability while making a positive impact on their host communities, • curriculum that prepares students for co-op work terms at SEAMEO-RETRAC • initiatives to enhance the student experience at SEAMEO-RETRAC, • how this partnership impacts SEAMEO-RETRAC’s programs and efforts to advance efforts toward addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and • explorations around further development of this partnership. https://bccie.bc.ca/news/university-of-victoria-student-gains-intercultural-experience-through-co-op-with-seameo/ Learning Objectives: • Connecting experiences – from student experiences to partner experiences • Co-operative education and community engagement experiences as a mechanism for developing employability skills, and professional networks • Curriculum that enhances student learning and community engagement Target Audience: • Partnership Development Directors/Coordinators/Managers – partnership and collaboration, SDG education and impact • Faculty and sessional instructors – global development studies • Student Support/Advisors – student engagement in SDGs, Work-Integrated Learning Target Audience Level: Intermediate
