The World Association of Co-operative Education (WACE) in partnership with Australian edtech start-up Practera delivers a scalable ‘Global Challenge’ virtual student work-integrated learning program. This innovative program creates an inclusive and diverse platform for a global network of OECD and non-OECD universities, students and organisations to collaborate on real projects aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN’s SDGs). Since December 2020, over 500 students from 33 institutions located in 18 countries and industry partners located in16 countries, including Australia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Cambodia, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, UK, Botswana and India, have participated. This panel session will profile student, institutional and industry perspectives on their participation and program outcomes achieved. The program design, underpinned by WIL research and quality principles, maintains student engagement with students reporting increases in a range of skill and knowledge areas. The design features contributing to this impact including the link to the UN’s SDGs, multi-disciplinary transnational teams, use of an experiential learning platform, cultural intelligence workshop, self and peer reviews and reflection sessions will be outlined. Strategies to overcome challenges encountered to inclusion and participation will also be discussed. In 2022 Global Challenge was recognised as a finalist in the 2022 PIEoneer Real Life learning Award. Learning Objectives: • Understanding of the student, industry, and institutional benefits of participating in transnational multidisciplinary virtual projects aligned to the UN sustainable Development Goals • Gain insights into strategies for student preparation for participating in such programs including developing students’ cultural intelligence and enhancing skills in reflection and articulating their skill development • learn how WACE and Practera have approached the context, objectives and design for an impactful, short form, global, inclusive and scalable virtual work-integrated learning program Target Audience: Staff involved in mobility, student support, inclusion, work integrated learning , experiential education or employability Target Audience Level: Intermediate, Advanced

Biography

Katrina Greig has over 20 years of experience in the higher education sector, facilitating student engagement, employability and career development. As Practera’s Executive Director Programs, Katrina currently leads a global team providing digitally enabled, authentic programs engaging tens of thousands of students from >100 Higher Education partners with thousands of industry clients & mentors. Katrina joined Practera in 2021 following a career in the University sector, where her last role was as the Manager of Career Development Learning at the University of Queensland, developing employability programming and leading careers teams to service UQ’s 50,000 students. As part of this role, Katrina led the embedding of careers staff in major faculties, introduced Employability Week and led major systems implementation projects. Katrina is passionate about employability development, the power of education technology and bridging the gap to graduate employment for students. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology, Certification in Career Development and Agile Project Management.

Biography

Judie Kay is currently WACE Vice Chair Programs and Partnerships and a WACE Executive Committee member. Previously, Judie held senior positions in three Australian Universities managing Institutional employability and work integrated learning strategies. Currently Judie is leading the WACE Global Challenge involving transnational student teams working on industry projects.

Biography

Chee Wai MAK received his Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical & Electronics) from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 1994. In 1994, he joined Western Digital (Singapore) and has since held positions in different functions under Product Engineering. In 2000, he joined Western Digital (Malaysia) when Western Digital moved its Asia Operations to Malaysia, closing the Singapore facility.

Biography

Norah McRae, PhD, is Associate Provost, Co-operative and Experiential Education and adjunct faculty member of the Department of Psychology at the University of Waterloo. Her involvement in co-operative and work-integrated education spans more than twenty years, over which time she has led strategic program development and research on student engagement, community-engaged learning and intercultural competency development. She is a faculty member for the WACE Planning Institute for Global and Experiential Education and the WACE Assessment Institute. She has also served as President of the Canadian Association for Co-operative Education and is an Executive member of the World Association for Co-operative and Work-integrated Education Board of Directors.
