Education throughout history has sought to prepare young people to contribute to the sustainability of their social contexts. Schooling in the twentieth century prepared young people for industrial realities of punctuality, predesigned work, performance monitoring, assessment, and then promotion. The competencies that are required for success today are seeing the big picture, ability to combine disparate pieces into a whole, to work in virtual and hybrid environments, with people across continents, time zones, and languages to achieve common purposes. Yet, education systems continue to operate as if we were teaching in the twentieth century. In this session you will learn how the sustainable development goals and Global Citizenship Education (GCED) have been embedded in the context of a New Zealand high school, university and at the non-government and government, as a way to innovate and transform education practices. By ushering in a coordinated suite of qualifications based upon transferable skills, an understanding of bases of knowledge (including indigenous knowledge and a diversity of ethical paradigms) so desperately needed in an uncertain world, GCED brings local and international students together through a focus on global connections and intercultural experiences in the Asia-Pacific and beyond. Learning Objectives: 1. Understanding what GCED is and how it has developed. 2. Conceptualizing the role and opportunities that emerge by implementing courses and initiatives around the Sustainable development goals as a means to having GCED in shaping innovative approaches to international education. 3. Understanding the role of global citizenship in Asia Pacific contexts and make connections with institution-based strategies. 4. Understanding how global citizenship education brings local and international students together through a focus on global issues, and intercultural experiences in the Asia-Pacific. 5. Apply a variety of techniques to engage key stakeholders in global competency learning. 6. Understand the power of transformational international higher education Target Audience: International education faculty and staff, trainers and others who are involved in developing global competence or intercultural diversity training in education. Participants interested in GCED relevance to and implementation in the Asia Pacific region. Target Audience Level: Intermediate
