ADEA Symposium: Delaying progression of T1D at every age and stage

Biography

John Wentworth is an endocrinologist and diabetes researcher at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. With Peter Colman and Michelle So, he leads Type1Screen, a national platform offering screening for type 1 diabetes risk and support for those who test positive. He is part of the multinational TrialNet consortium that in June 2022 announced results of a clinical trial demonstrating that immune therapy can delay the onset of type 1 diabetes. He currently leads the Australiasian T1D Immunotherapy Collaborative that aims to accelerate development of T1D prevention through increased clinical trial activity throughout Australia.

Biography

Michelle So is a Clinical Research Fellow at St Vincent’s Institute and endocrinologist at Royal Melbourne and Northern Hospitals. She obtained her PhD in 2018 investigating C-peptide as a target of peripheral T-cells in type 1 diabetes. Michelle completed post-doctoral research in the area of type 1 diabetes prevention and translational immunology at the Diabetes Clinical Research Program at Benaroya Research Institute (Seattle, USA) in 2019-2020. Michelle is the education and training lead for the Australasian Type 1 Diabetes Immunotherapy Collaborative (ATIC).

Biography

Alison Roberts is a clinical nurse with more than 15 years' experience in clinical research, including coordinating clinical trials, and screening and monitoring studies of individuals at risk of developing type 1 diabetes. Alison has a particular interest in understanding the psychosocial aspects of managing type 1 diabetes and research.

Biography

Jenny Couper is a paediatric endocrinologist and head of paediatrics, University of Adelaide. She has lead the Environmental Determinants of Islet Autoimmunity (ENDIA) nation-wide consortium since 2012. Over 10 years this consortium has reached full recruitment of 1500 babies. She is a steering member of two related initiatives in the prevention of type 1 diabetes space: the JDRFA Australian Population Screening program pilot for type 1 diabetes and the JDRFA Australasian Immune trials Collaborative. She was elected a member of the International Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) Advisory Council in 2020.

Biography

Meaghan Read is the Community Engagement Lead at Diabetes Victoria, a member of the ACADI co-design platform and the Chair of the Community Engagement Panel for the Australasian Type 1 Diabetes Immunotherapy Collaborative (ATIC). Meaghan brings 37 years of lived experience of type 1 diabetes along with professional experience in laboratory, clinical and pharmaceutical research to these roles. She holds a BSc(Hons) from The University of Melbourne together with qualifications in Diabetes Education and Community Engagement. Meaghan is a passionate diabetes advocate with great passion for community engagement and co-design in the research sector.
