Dr Mark Barone
Sleep Disorders in Diabetes: from Care to Policies
Biography
Dr. Mark Barone, living with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease for 33 years, holds a PhD in Human Physiology and two post-graduate diplomas in Diabetes Education and Communication. With over 25 years of experience in research (5,000+ citations), health education, advocacy, public and global health, he has worked with various organizations to develop programs and policies that improve care access and empower healthcare professionals and individuals with Non-Communicable Conditions (NCCs). He joined ADJ Diabetes Brasil in the early 2000s, contributing to movements that led to comprehensive diabetes care in Brazil. In 2017, he co-founded the Intersectoral Forum of NCCs/NCDs in Brazil (ForumCCNTs), which now includes over 200 public, private and not-for-profit institutions partnering to improve health quality and reduce premature deaths due to NCCs (SDGs 3.4 and 17). He has been collaborating with the WHO’s Global Coordination Mechanism on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases (GCM/NCD) on its framework for the meaningful engagement of people with lived experience (PWLE / PLWNCD). From 2020 to 2022, he served as the Vice-President of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). Currently, he is a member of several advisory and scientific committees of various institutions, including: IAPO, BMJ Patient Panel, RICPHI, NCD-Lab/GCM/WHO, FIND and LFAC.

Sleep and Metabolic Health: A Focus on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Biography
Ms Nur Abdul Jafar graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Science (Biochemistry and Microbiology) and First Class Honours in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She obtained a Master of Science in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Nur is presently a PhD candidate at The Monash Centre for Health Research and Implementation. Her PhD research focuses on understanding the role of sleep in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and exploring strategies to improve sleep in females with PCOS. Nur’s wider research interests include investigating the significance of sleep in population health.

Optimising Diabetes Care: The Essential Role of Sleep Education

Dr Giuliana Murfet, an experienced diabetes and metabolic bariatrics nurse practitioner, is an ADEA Fellow and past ADEA President, an inaugural Bullwinkel Scholar and was named Jan Baldwin CDE of the Year in 2022. She actively advises the NDSS and Diabetes Australia as chair of the Health Professional and Medical Educational and Scientific Advisory Councils and is a member of the Living Evidence for Diabetes Consortium. As a casual academic and Visiting Scholar at the University of Technology Sydney’s School of Public Health, her research focuses on diabetes workforce development, nurse-led care models, and health literacy. Giuliana authored the Capability Framework for Diabetes Care and is dedicated to innovative solutions in healthcare.

Biography
Dr Shannon Lin, the Diabetes Course Director & Senior Lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), also dedicated her efforts to outreach diabetes clinics in Indigenous communities. She also collaborates extensively with Asian Pacifics and is identified as the most influential Australian diabetes professional in China. Shannon is an Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian and a Credential Diabetes Educator with 20 years of experience. Her contributions and clinical excellence have garnered several accolades, including multiple teaching and research excellence awards at UTS and the 2023 UTS Alumni Award. Shannon was awarded the National Credentialled Diabetes Educator of the Year 2023. Additionally, she serves as a Board Director for the Australian Diabetes Educators Association.
