Biography

Associate Professor Glynis Ross is an endocrinologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (Lead Endocrinologist in the RPAH Diabetes in Pregnancy Service since 1989) and Bathurst. She has been a Diabetes Australia Board member since 2016. Glynis was on the Australian Diabetes Society Council 2012-2020 [President 2018-2020]. She was on the ADIPS Council for two 8-year terms [President 2008-2010]. Glynis is currently Chair of the ADS Education Advisory Council. In addition, she is Chair of the NDSS Diabetes Expert Reference Group, a member of the NSW Diabetes and Endocrine Executive, national Diabetes Expert Advisory Group, Australian National Diabetes Strategy Expert Reference Group and a number of other state and national working parties in diabetes. Her major interests are diabetes in pregnancy, type 1 diabetes, diabetes technology, inpatient diabetes management, diabetes health professional education and diabetes advocacy.

Biography

Dr Ashley Ng is a diabetes advocate, a diabetes researcher and accredited practising dietitian. Her lived experience has led to her passion in consumer and community involvement in research and healthcare improvement. Ashley's areas of interest in research include supporting young adults with diabetes during life transitions, digital health solutions in diabetes care and community engagement, including peer support.

John Wentworth is an endocrinologist based at Royal Melbourne Hospital and the adjoining Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. His current research focuses on the intersection between immunology and metabolism and the development of immunotherapy to preserve beta cell function in type 1 diabetes.

Biography

Justine is an experienced Board Director, Group CEO and transformation specialist. With qualifications in Law and Science, Justine has significant experience in non-executive director roles and senior executive roles across the health and human services sectors. She has held senior positions with listed companies, commercial organisations and not-for-profits. Justine’s experience spans large scale operational turnarounds, strategy, integration and transformation roles. She has worked across health insurance, disability services, aged care services, large scale government health contracting, the domestic violence sector, chronic disease management, population health, corporate health, hospital in the home, allied health services and health technology businesses. Justine is on the Boards of Uniting Care Queensland and the Diabetes Australia Research Trust and was previously on the Boards of LeapIn!, the Australian Diabetes Society, the Australian Diabetes Educators Association and the Queensland Advisory Board for the Starlight Children’s Foundation. Justine is currently the Group CEO of Diabetes Australia. The Diabetes Australia Group provides services and support in Australia and internationally. In Australia, the organisation operates as the national peak body for all Australians living with and at risk of diabetes, providing advocacy support, research funding and health service delivery supporting almost two million Australians. The organisation also delivers state­ based population health chronic disease prevention programs including My Health for Life (Queensland) Get Healthy Services (New South Wales) and The Coach Program (Tasmania). Diabetes Australia also delivers the Life for A Child Program supporting almost 60,000 children in approx 50 countries around the world gain access to insulin, education, and support.

Cardiovascular Autonomic neuropathy in Indigenous Australians with Type 2 Diabetes

Biography

Endocrinologist MBBS, PhD, FRACP Dr Chinmay Marathe is a senior staff specialist endocrinologist at the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) and the Diabetes Lead of the RAH Multi-Disciplinary Diabetic Foot Service. He is also a post-doctoral fellow at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Adelaide Medical School, University of Adelaide and visiting endocrinologist to Aboriginal Health Services in Whyalla and Ceduna, SA. Dr Marathe graduated from India in 2003 (MBBS, University of Nagpur). He undertook basic physician training in the UK and Australia followed by specialist training in diabetes and endocrinology at the Royal Adelaide and The Queen Elizabeth Hospitals (2013-2015). His PhD work, under the supervision of Prof Michael Horowitz, evaluated the relationships between incretins (GLP-1 and GIP), gastric emptying and postprandial glycaemia in diabetes. He was awarded the University of Adelaide Dean’s Commendation and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) Trainee Research award for his PhD dissertation in 2016 (University of Adelaide). He subsequently undertook clinical and research postdoctoral training in the United Kingdom (King’s College London, 2016-2017). Dr Marathe is an expert in incretin-based medications (GLP-1 and GIP) having published over 50 papers in the area and continues to be actively involved in research involving diabetes and incretins, currently supervising five higher research degree students and having gained >$2 million dollars (AUD) in research funding in the area. Dr Marathe is a past recipient of numerous prestigious awards including the Australian Diabetes Society Skip-Martin Fellowship, the NHMRC Early Career Fellowship and Diabetes UK’s “Innnovators in Diabetes” iDia Fellowship. He holds membership of the American Diabetes Association, European Society for the Study of Diabetes, Diabetes UK and the Australian Diabetes Society.

Biography

Professor Anthony Russell (MBBS PhD FRACP) has been Director of Diabetes and Endocrinology, Alfred Health, Melbourne and Professor of Medicine with the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University since Jan 2022. Prof Russell was previously the Director of Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane from 2005 to 2021. In Queensland, Prof Russell completed a 4 year term as Co-Chair of the Qld Statewide Diabetes Clinical Network and in this role provided advice and implemented strategies to assist in the management of patients with diabetes. Professor Russell has lead innovative projects to provide new models of care for people with diabetes. He has implemented the “Beacon” practice model, providing integrated care for patients with complex Type 2 diabetes in the community with up-skilled GPs and performed a proof-of-concept of eConsultations. He has initiated a Telehealth service, delivering diabetes services to rural and remote indigenous and non-indigenous communities across Qld. Prof Russell has been on the advisory group for the “IDEAS” project which increased rates of retinal screening and treatment of retinopathy in indigenous people with diabetes across Qld. Professor Russell has been a Chief Investigator on two NHMRC research projects and more recently CIB on a MRFF grant. He has been Chair of the Diabetes Australia Research Trust grant review panel and previously a Sub-editor (Endocrinology) for the Internal Medicine Journal. Prof Russell was on the expert advisory group for the NHMRC guidelines on the Management of Type 1 diabetes and a member of the Expert Group for Therapeutic Guidelines. He sits on the steering committees for Diabetes Feet Australia and the National Association of Diabetes Centres. Tony is currently President of the Australian Diabetes Society.
